Enforcement inspections

As the owner, user or operator of a commercial vehicle, you are likely to be subject to an inspection by a member of the RSA enforcement team. Our Transport Officers check compliance with EU drivers’ hours and tachograph rules; mobile workers working time directive; requirements to hold a Road Transport Operator Licence and drivers CPC.  Our Vehicle / Technical Inspectors check compliance with obligations regarding vehicle maintenance and repair systems and vehicle roadworthiness.  Here you will find information about the inspections we conduct and how we select them.

Enforcement Inspections

We do two kinds of inspections :

  • Premises inspections – we inspect documents, records and vehicles at your premises.
  • Roadside inspections – we inspect your vehicle and your driver documentation while on the road in conjunction with the Garda Síochána.

Inspections are part of our enforcement strategy to make sure operators, owners and users of commercial vehicles are compliant with legal obligations. Compliance is vital to ensure safer vehicles and drivers on our roads. While any operator premises, vehicles or drivers can be selected for inspection, many of our inspections are more targeted at operators who are more likely to be non-compliant, allowing compliant operators to go about their business with minimal disruption. Our objective is to improve compliance throughout the commercial sector in the areas of:

The “Commercial Vehicle Operator Risk Indicator” (CVORI) will feed into this targeted approach.

If you have concerns that an operator or driver may be acting illegally in relation to Vehicle Roadworthiness, Drivers Hours, Tachographs and/or Unlicensed Haulage your can submit a confidential complaint to the RSA. Find out how to submit your complaint on our complaints page.
